Using Our Libraries

Library Services are a support service, our job is to support your academic progress. We do a number of things to ensure this, including providing a relevant and useful physical and digital library collection.

The library can also offer a huge amount of support, ranging from guidance with assignment writing, to understanding referencing and research methods.

You can:
  1. Email your work to us for proofreading - this will get assigned to a member of the library team, and they will be in touch with notes and feedback on your work.
  2. View your subject-specific guide, with direct links to books, eBooks and journal articles that are on your course reading list.
  3. Book a one to one session on Microsoft Teams or in-person at one of our campus libraries. These sessions can cover whatever you feel you need help with, ranging from how to reference, to how to structure a literature review.
  4. From September 2022, we will be providing group events in our campus libraries on a number of study skills topics. You will be able to book yourself on to these sessions when they go live.

All libraries can be used by UCEN students. However, The Cube (at Openshaw) and City UCEN libraries are specifically for UCEN students, and so TMC students must use Openshaw FE library and the City TMC library at these locations instead. Due to the small size of the library at our City Labs campus, only those who study there are permitted to use it.

Our libraries are stocked with physical books and journals suited to the courses that are held at those campuses. However, students are free to take or reserve books from any of our libraries. Some of our libraries also have fiction, poetry and nonfiction books on offer, so you can read for pleasure, as well as reading to support your learning.

You also have access to our online collection, and a number of databases and online resources.
